China Issues US Human Rights Record
BEIJING, March 8 (Bernama) -- China issued on Thursday the Human Rights Record of the United States in 2006 in response to the Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2006 issued by the US Department of State on Tuesday, China's Xinhua news agency reported.
Released by the Information Office of China's State Council, the Chinese report lists a multitude of cases to show the human rights situation in the United States and its violation of human rights in other countries.
"As in previous years, the State Department pointed the finger at human rights conditions in more than 190 countries and regions, including China, but avoided touching on the human rights situation in the United States," the document says.
By publishing the Human Rights Record of the United States in 2006, the document says it aims to "help people have a better understanding of the situation in the United States and promote the international cause of human rights".
Relying on its strong military power, the United States has trespassed on the sovereignty of other countries and violated human rights in other countries, the document says.
A large number of innocent Iraqi civilians have died in the war launched by the United States in 2003.
The document says the United States has a flagrant record of violating the Geneva Convention in systematically abusing prisoners during the Iraqi War and the War in Afghanistan.
On February 15, 2006, Australia's SBS TV aired more than 10 pictures and video clips taken at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison; the images included: a man's throat was cut off, left forearm of a man was left with burns and shrapnel wounds, a blood-stained interrogation room, and a seemingly insane man's body covered with his own feces.
Even in the United States, people's life, property and personal security are not duly protected, the document says.
It quoted a report by the U.S. Justice Department on Sept. 10, 2006 as saying that there were 5.2 million violent crimes in the United States in 2005, up 2.5 percent from the previous year, the highest rate in 15 years.
Statistics released by the department in 2006 showed that in 2005 American residents age 12 or above experienced 23 million crimes; for every 1,000 persons age 12 or older, there occurred 1 rape or sexual assault, 1 assault with injury, and 3 robberies.
In the United States, human rights violations committed by law enforcement and judicial departments are also common. Following the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other government agencies have referred 6,472 individuals to prosecutors on terrorism-related charges.
The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University says nearly three-quarters of terrorism suspects seized by the United States in the five years following the September 11 attacks have not even made it to trial because of lack of evidence against them.
In 64 percent of the cases, federal prosecutors decided that they were not worth prosecuting, while an additional nine percent were either dismissed by judges or the individuals were found not guilty, according to a report by the AFP on September 4, 2006.
The document says the United States has lorded it over other countries by condemning their human rights practices while ignoring its own problems, which exposes double standard and hegemonies in the field of human rights.
By publishing the Human Rights Record of the United States in 2006, the document says it aims to "help the world people have a better understanding of the situation in the United States and promote the international cause of human rights".
This is the eighth consecutive year that China has issued human rights record of the United States in answer to the U.S. State Department annual report.

It's totally not making sense at all. Where is this country heading to ? Just to re-cap and point out that Japan FTA had been signed not too long ago with some pretty quick negotiation and also no public feedback or discussion at all. As what I understand, mango trade for CBU cars and etc. I believe Japan is smart and not to negotiate a trade agreement that only benefit us. Therefore assuming that Jap got a good deal......then where does that leave us ? Can we all see the fine print on the FTA deal or it is under official secret act and therefore confidential ? Taken the shine off the gloss......
"Nation comes first in FTA talks, says PM"
KUALA LUMPUR, March 7 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the government would always safeguard the nation's interest in its negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States.Where is the compassion for a traumatised teen?
THE policewoman was apparently harsh and abusive in the way she investigated the case of a 13-year-old student who claimed that a coach had molested her at a swimming pool.
“Do you know where the person lives?” the officer is said to have asked.
When the reply was a simple “no’’, the officer apparently shot back angrily: “How am I supposed to arrest the person if you don’t know where he lives?”
The victim’s older sister told me that she had a tough time protecting the young girl from more trauma. The older girl was at a loss as to what to do.
She said the officer did not brief them on the investigations procedure, but that after a few more questions, the latter called the school and gave instructions for the coach to report to the police station.
Upon hearing this, the victim apparently shrank back in fear and cried while the older sister protested the move, asking for the “confrontation’’ to be called off.
Because this was denied the siblings sought my advice.
I went to the police station and saw that the older sister looked frustrated, and the younger one, bewildered.
Not knowing the proper procedures myself, I decided to remain calm and quiet, urging the older sister to do the same – advice I received from my friends.
We tried to negotiate for a one-way mirror identification, but instead got scolded by the officer for suggesting it.
“Don’t you know we have nothing against this man?’’ the officer told the younger sister.
“You have no marks on you, no traces of semen and all that. If he doesn’t admit to the crime, we cannot detain him.
“We need him to see you so he will know you are the victim and not some other victim that he could have molested.
“And if you don’t identify him, he could turn around and sue you and sue me!”
As I continued advising the older sister, we heard the officer complaining loudly to her colleagues that “the case would not hold in court because the girl was uncooperative.’’
Then we heard her say: “How? This is the son of Datuk (followed by a name that we could not catch) and he has filed a report saying this is all slander.”
I told the older sister to ask the officer to call the coach and set a time for the meeting.
We waited for about two hours and the younger sister was getting tired and restless.
Meanwhile, the officer then handed a report that she had written to the sisters, suggesting that they both read and sign it.
This done, we left the room and decided to wait outside. I took the opportunity to seek legal advice from my friends.
We were told to wait a little longer as the coach was on his way to the station.
However, half an hour later we were told to go home as the coach might not come at all.
He was apparently making conflicting statements about his whereabouts.
The ordeal lasted some three hours for me, but for the sisters, it was much longer.
The siblings had first lodged a police report at 1pm at the Bandar Sunway police station before they were instructed to see an investigating officer at the Subang Jaya district police headquarters at 3.30pm.
What angers me is the way the police officer conducted the entire investigation.
The 13-year-old’s feelings were not taken into account.
I am not trying to determine whether a crime has been committed, but child protection laws state that a child’s interests must come first.
And yet, here’s a case where I witnessed that even the people concerned with supporting her do not seem to be aware of this.
